Correspondence Course in the History & Theory of Traditional Thai Medicine for Teachers of Thai Massage

The only course of its kind anywhere in the world! This course is based on a survey of the research into the healing traditions of Thailand from the late 19th century to today, with focus on both the indigenous forms of folk-medicine and the historical interactions with Indian medical knowledge and culture.

This is an open-ended correspondence course in the History of Thai medicine designed for self-motivated practitioners and instructors of Thai healing traditions. This course is equivalent to a college-level course on Thai medicine, and was designed by Pierce Salguero as part of a Master's Degree with focus on the History of Asian Medicine.

Upon completion of this course, students will be competent to teach courses on Thai medical theory, history, and culture according to the guidelines set forth by TaoMountain.

Students are given a huge amount (1000+ pages) of English-language academic writings on Thai medical theory and history from which to choose readings. Students must read a series of required readings (marked below) to establish a broad base of knowledge, and then may specialize in one of three areas: Thai Ayurvedic Medicine (including massage and herbal traditions), Thai Folk Healing, or Thai Buddhism, Culture and History.

Completion of the course will require finalization of a 7-10 page academic paper on the topic of their choice addressing their interests in their chosen area of specialization. (This academic paper will remain the intellectual property of the writer, but TM will be allowed to add this to our online library of scholarly research on Thai tradition.) Certificate will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

Students will be guided thoughout the process of study by unlimited email consultation with Pierce Salguero. Suggestions can be solicited for paper topics, additional readings, and other sources.
