Third Annual Traditional
Thai Massage & Medicine Symposium:
Strengthening the Thai Healing Arts for the Next 50 Years
|
Last year we celebrated the history of Thai massage over the last 50 years. We launched the 50th Year Anniversary of the Old Medicine Hospital ("Thai Massage School Shivagakomarpaj") at the Thai Institute in Arlington, VA. We honored the traditions of Thailand and the Master Teachers that have influenced the development and spread of Thai massage across the world.
This year we focus on strengthening the Thai healing arts for the next 50 years by focusing on our own education and knowledge. This year's annual wai khru and symposium will focus directly on strengthening the lineage of Thai healing arts here in the West.
We launch our event in Thai style with a full-day "Thai Healing Pavilion". We invite you to experience the whole range of Thai healing arts. Day 2 will center on the Annual Wai Khru in the morning. The afternoon of Day 2 and all day on Day 3 will feature presentations, discussion panels, and workshops.

Annual Wai Khru - Shivagakomarpaj Lineage
Wai khru (pronounced like the English words "why crew") is the most important
traditional practice of the Thai healer. Wai khru is a formal ceremony in which a
practitioner of Thai massage or other Thai healing arts honors his or her teachers
and lineage. Practitioners show their gratitude to the lineage of teachers who
handed ancient medical knowledge down to the present day, and receive
blessings of the masters.
The ceremony is usually performed individually by practitioners in their homes
or places of business every day. However, it is also important for practitioners to
gather together once a year to honor the founders of their lineage as a whole.
The Chaichakan family, the founding family of the Shivagakomarpaj Lineage
("Old Medicine Hospital"), honored the Thai Institute as the seat of their lineage in
the west and recognize this annual wai khru as a gathering for all students, practitioners,
and teachers.
The vast majority of all Thai massage practitioners and teachers in the Western
world have learned from teachings traced back to the Shivagakomarpaj Lineage
and the founder "Master" Ajahn Sintorn Chaichakan. While many Western
students and practitioners in this lineage have learned an abbreviated wai khru
ceremony and practice it on a regular basis, they are most often not able to attend
the major annual ceremony in Chiang Mai. As part of our role as the
Shivagakomarpaj Lineage seat in the West, the Thai Institute assumes the
responsibility of an annual major ceremony of wai khru here in the U.S.
We invite all practitioners of Thai massage that are in any way connected with the
Shivagakomarpaj Lineage to join us in this annual celebration. Whether you
studied with any teacher from the Old Medicine Hospital, Thai Institute of
Healing Arts, ITM, Sunshine Network, Lotus Palm, ITTA, TaoMountain, or any
other teacher, you are invited to participate in the ceremony in order to honor
our shared lineage, receive the blessings of our masters, and ensure the
effectiveness of your therapies. If you are teaching a form of Thai massage that
derives from the Old Medicine Hospital curriculum, it is particularly important
that you attend this ceremony annually in order to be considered a legitimate
instructor in the Shivagakomarpaj Lineage.

Presentation:
Future of Thai Medicine in the Western World: Spiritual Practice and
Complementary-Alternative Healthcare
Traditional Thai massage and medicine are complex and multifaceted
practices. Both have developed into multiple styles and systems in Thailand
and the West. Both have been preserved, transmitted, and recreated through a
long line of practitioners and teachers. Both are today simultaneously
rooted in ancient tradition and validated by modern science. Dr. Salguero will
explore historical and contemporary connections between Thai healing, yoga,
spiritual traditions, and modern complementary-alternative healthcare systems.
Dr Pierce Salguero is a historian of traditional Asian medicine with a PhD from
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. A specialist in Buddhist healing practices, he is
an expert on the history of Indian, Chinese, and Thai medical systems, and regularly
lectures on the cross-cultural connections between Asian traditions at academic
conferences in the US and abroad. Dr Salguero has also been a major proponent
of the Thai healing arts in the USA for the past 15 years. He has written multiple books
on Thai medicine (including the Encyclopedia of Thai Massage) that have been
translated into Chinese, Czech, Estonian, Portuguese, and Spanish, and currently
teaches courses on all aspects of traditional Thai medicine at the Thai Institute.

Sangkatan:
Establishing a Bridge with Your Local Thai Community
David Roylance, a practicing Theravada Buddhist, will introduce the meaning and
proper protocol of a Sangkatan Ceremony. He will explain how this ceremony can
help you to establish a connection with your local Thai community to support your
continued learning in the Thai traditions.
The traditional style of learning in Thailand is through the oral tradition. A style of
learning that relies on a strong relationship between the teacher and student.
Having a deep connection with your local Thai community can open further
opportunities for you to continue your learning in Thai culture, traditions, and
medical practices. For some, it can be intimidating to enter a community of
people with traditions so different than ours. David will help create a bridge
so that you will feel comfortable navigating Thai culture in your local
community or on trips to Thailand.
Following the presentation, participants will be invited to join David for a
Sangkatan ceremony during our field trip to Wat Thai DC in Silver Springs, MD.
Luang Pal Thanat Inthisan, Ph.D., a Theravada Buddhist Monk and abbot at
Wat Thai DC in Silver Spring, MD, will lead us in a Sangkatan ceremony.
David Roylance, Executive Director of Thai Institute of Healing Arts and Touch
of Asia Therapy Center, has lived and worked with Thais since 2001. He has
personally visited over 150 Thai temples in both the USA and Thailand. He
currently lives in Thailand several months per year. David will share his insights and
cultural experiences from continuous interaction with the vibrant culture of
Thailand.

Field Trip:
Wat Thai DC Buddhist Temple in Silver Springs, MD
Thai Buddhist Temples, or "Wat" are located all throughout the beautiful country
of Thailand. They dot the cityscape and serve as the focal point for every village.
In addition to a spiritual foundation, temple facilities serve as community
centers, educational venues, and sometimes offer medical care.
This field trip will guide you through the experience of visiting an active Thai
Temple here in the US for a peek at monastic life and community activities.
Visiting a Thai temple is a way to become part of the local Thai community and to
experience its rich culture and traditions in action. If you've never visited a Thai
Temple — or if you have, but didn't know what to do — this will be the perfect
introduction and experience you'll always remember. See their website for more
details: http://watthaidc.org
(Transportation will be coordinated on the day of the event by individual
participants and by metro.)

Best Practices for Treating Chronic Pain using Thai Massage
Thai massage is known across the world for its ability to address significant health issues. Practitioners typically need to wait until more advanced training to learn how to treat specific disorders or even more commonly seen issues.
In this workshop, our professional Thai practitioners will explain best practices for treating chronic pain that will aid the beginning and most advanced practitioners in treating their clients. They will share best practices developed through our therapy centers for treating chronic pain such as significant back pain, neck pain, spinal injuries, sports injuries, artificial joints, arthritis, cancer treatments, lyme disease, and fibromyalgia.
Our professional practitioners treat nearly 10,000 clients per year using Thai massage as a medical treatment. Many of our practitioners are native Thais that started learning massage as a child from their parents, grandparents, and village elders in their home country of Thailand. This workshop will put you front and center with individuals actively working with chronic and debilitating pain using Thai massage to address clients health concern. Our practitioners will demonstrate how they treat chronic pain with Thai massage. You will have the ability to interact and ask questions related to the nature of treating client's pain and illnesses.
Phatchara (Lek) Khuankliang, Sungwan (Wan) Kaewwilai Beaulieu, David Nix, Viengkhong (Be) Khambay, Narisa (Cherry) Phatjareesakul, Nittha Moxham, Jillian Kolnitys, Jeff Hawkins, and Raven Demeter will share detailed information on how to treat a host of conditions you will see in your Thai massage practice. These are the professional practitioners currently staffed at both our therapy centers, Touch of Asia and the Thai Institute of Healing Arts. See their bios by clicking on the links.

Thai Magic Medicine for Healing and Protection
In this session, David Roylance will introduce multiple types of healing magic
that are used in Thailand specifically for the cure of patients and the protection of
practitioners. Any Thai business owner — but especially those whose
establishments involve healing — will be sure to engage in Thai magical traditions
in order to increase their healing powers, attract success, and protect their clients
from negative energies and spirits. David will take participants on a tour of the
Thai Institute, stopping to introduce the center's spirit house, yan (magic
diagrams), spirits of prosperity, folk artwork, central altar, and his collection of
rare and valuable Thai amulets, and will discuss the significance and use of each.

Business Development and Practice Building: Best Practices for
Building a Compassionate Massage, Yoga, and/or Healing Arts
Business
Building a compassionate and successful healing arts practice is a dream we
aspire to achieve. However, books on business and how to build a successful
company often times don't target our industry or share our unique values.
This panel will focus on the joys and pitfalls of owning/operating a therapy
practice or educational center. Discuss your ideas, challenges, and questions
among others who share your concerns within your industry, and gain insights to
help you build a "thriving" healing arts practice. This panel will encompass both
practical suggestions on building a successful business from David Roylance and
an open interactive discussion among participants.
David Roylance, Executive Director of the Thai Institute of Healing Arts and
Touch of Asia Therapy Center, has over 15 years of experience in the business
world. In 2003, he left a successful career managing multi-million dollar
corporations to start a healing arts practice in the living room of his apartment.
His institution is now the largest Thai massage operation in the US, with over 30
positions within his company, having provided over 40,000 therapy sessions, and
having taught thousands of students the healing arts of Thailand. David believes that
financial success and a compassion-centered approach go hand in hand, as
growing business prosperity allows an increasing ability to touch individual
people's lives.
